Transgender Transitioning and Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common issue that can arise during the transitioning process, particularly when transitioning from female to male (FTM). This topic is becoming more prevalent, and it’s important to address it early on, especially if you are starting hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with testosterone.

Here’s why hair loss may occur and what can be done:

  1. Genetic Predisposition: If you have a family history of genetic thinning or hair loss (on your mum's or dad’s side, or with siblings), there is a possibility that you could inherit this predisposition. For individuals transitioning FTM, testosterone therapy can increase this risk of hair thinning or loss.

  2. Impact of Testosterone: Increased testosterone levels can accelerate hair thinning, particularly if you are already genetically predisposed to it. This happens because higher testosterone can lead to more production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is linked to male-pattern baldness.

  3. Early Intervention: Hair loss during transitioning is treatable, but early intervention is crucial. If you start to notice thinning or hair loss early on in your HRT journey, seeking treatment right away can prevent further progression.

  4. Consultation with Specialists: It’s important to bring this up with both your transitioning specialist and a hair loss expert such as a trichologist or dermatologist. They can work together to ensure that your hair loss is addressed effectively without disrupting your transitioning process.

  5. Treatment Options: There are a variety of treatments available, including medications and topical solutions. These can help to slow down or prevent hair loss while you undergo testosterone therapy.

Addressing hair loss during transitioning can be stressful, but with early action and the right support, it’s something that can be managed effectively. Don't hesitate to bring this up with your specialist so you can work together to create a plan tailored to your needs.
